Living in a Connected World
The internet of things, or IoT, is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers (UIDs) and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.
The Internet of Things (IoT): A Deeper Dive
IoT has evolved from the convergence of wireless technologies, micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), microservices and the internet. The convergence has helped tear down the silo walls between operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT), allowing unstructured machine-generated data to be analyzed for insights that will drive improvements.
IoT and Our Daily Lives
The most tangible example of IoT are the swathes of interconnected devices in our homes – from smart bulbs that can be operated from your smartphone, to intelligent fridges that can order groceries when you’re running low.
Beyond the Home: IoT in Industries
Perhaps the greater transformation, though, is occurring at the industry level. Industries, such as manufacturing, transportation, utilities and healthcare, among others, are harnessing the power of IoT for things like predictive maintenance of machinery, automated logistics, and remote patient monitoring, to name but a few.
The Impact of IoT: Benefits and Challenges
The benefits of the IoT revolution are twofold: on an individual level, smart devices make our lives easier, automate routine tasks and help us be more productive. At an industrial level, IoT can increase operational efficiency, aid in better decision making and open up new revenue streams. However, there are challenges too – data privacy and security being the most significant among them.
What’s Next in the Landscape of IoT?
As we move forward, we can expect IoT to continue transforming our lives in ways we can’t even imagine yet. The potential for impact is huge – and we’re only just starting to scratch the surface.
